THE IMAGINATION. Maintaining a healthy imagination is such a necessity to our overall health and productivity…probably much more than we realize. Some of the greatest minds and talents across the globe leveraged their imagination as a central component to the success they achieved. Unfortunately, many adults also squander away this gift due to the woes that come conjoined with life. Think about it. How often do we find ourselves operating in survival mode? It seems we are often consumed with financial concerns, parenting solutions, relationship issues, and goals of retirement. Submerged underneath daily stressors; living without our imagination from one day to the next becomes normative. But what does this mean for our children? How does the imagination chamber affect them?
The Power of the Imagination on Our Children
One cannot overlook the power of the imagination upon a child’s life. Well documented psychological studies have robustly demonstrated both the benefits and repercussions that are affixed to children dependent upon what level of fitness their imagination is functioning at. Children with imaginations operating at optimal levels have shown the ability to create fantasy and imaginary worlds in which they frolic in and out from. This imagination chamber of children’s psyche has proven to be a necessary part of their development; serving as a primary means by which they process and evaluate the overload of input coming at them from every direction of the world. In fact; when imaginational thriving is present, a child is shown to both intermingle better with their peers and to possess the emotional fortitude required to navigate the difficult terrains of life.
When navigating negative experiences, children’s imagination usually provides healthy opportunities where they can process and endure grotesque circumstances like bullying, multifaceted forms of abuse, and sudden tragedy/death of a parent or loved one. This is crucial; for without the ability to depart from this world to another…even if only temporarily within their imagination; children would have no recourse to help them interpret the complexities that come conjoined to this troubled world. In other words, their imaginations serve as a proverbial counselor for their afflictions; often providing an escape from their difficult circumstances. Just consider how Timmy’s “leaves this world” while playing with his action figures in the midst of total chaos at home. As his parents scream verbal abuses towards one another, Timmy leans upon his imagination to take him away from what would otherwise force him into repetitive tears. His imagination helps him cope. Encouragingly, it is that same power of the imagination that children rely upon to illuminate (and then translate) good experiences into greater experiences with ever increasing jubilance.
Think of it this way. When a child experiences an event that is digested as pleasurable or attractive, childlike happiness towards that event swells within their heart. (They’re excited!) The overflow of that excitement usually permeates long after the event is over. This process is where the imagination is at play. As the imagination replays and reinforces just how amazing that positive experience was, a child develops an expectant hope for a future reoccurrence; believing it will reproduce that same jubilance they recently felt. And as this expectant hope drives their actions; children are further driven to act in a fashion that increases the probability of that happy moment reoccurring. As their actions produce enjoyable results, they find their imagination even more at play. This is incredibly attractive. The result of these enjoyable results produce even more actions fueled by more expectant hope. As the child witnesses the cumulative impact of both their actions and the results they produce, their imagination is stirred to hope forward yet again. Therefore, we can surmise that the imagination being fully utilize truly is a recipe for success… Not only for our children, but for each of us as well. It appears our imagination is more closely connected to our ability to hope…desire…believe…and have faith towards things than we probably realize. The ability to recognize these connections is a good gift from God. And this means everything when considering Halloween.

Halloween Serves as a Conduit Between Many Children and Their Imaginations
It’s not hard to understand the popularity surrounding this holiday. It goes well beyond the rudimentary concept of candy, costumes, and a night out across the town. Arguably, Halloween provides a platform like no other holiday in which a child’s imagination has the opportunity to fully manifest itself in all it’s glory. Consider five-year-old Amy and seven-year-old Bobby. As Amy frantically combs through aisles of clothes in pursuit of the perfect costume, her parents become witnesses to Amy’s infatuation for the perfect outward expression (costume) of her desired inner self. Her imagination is fully at play. And even if little Bobby concludes that Darth Vader or the Grim Reaper is most suitable to his liking; somewhere buried in the mind of his imagination, Bobby has aligned his heart to believe there is some desirable attribute within these characters to imitate for his joy. His imagination is also fully up play. And even if Amy’s and Bobby’s affections have been misguided in the wrong direction on this night, their reasoning usually comes from a place of relative innocence. Let us place aside all the arguments for and against Halloween for a moment. Can we not find agreement that the imagination is fully at play that night? And is it possible? Is it possible for an unleashed imagination to serve as a right and good gift from God? Before committing to the conversation of participation, let us first find agreement that Halloween serves as a powerful conduit between children and their imaginations.
To Participate or Not to Participate…That REALLY is the Question
Many Christian communities expose their posture when they elect to fully segregate their families from the Halloween experience. There are real consequences to consider when we instruct our children to follow us towards this end. We must come to understand that the historic principles in which Halloween was founded upon are no longer the prevailing motivations behind why the “typical” family participates on this holiday. We should hold confidence that Susie Smith next-door does not intend to walk her daughter down the street with hopes of being the world’s worst parent. Mrs. And Mr. Smith’s mindset is canyons apart from willful participation in any activity they felt would be harmful to the child. Assuming different upon the average parent is simply not helpful or hope-filled. Most parents are simply trying their best to leverage the night for their children’s innocent pleasure…and even if misguided, parents taking interest in their child is a good thing we should all celebrate.
So why do so many Bible Believing Christians detach themselves from neighborly engagement that evening? Demonic activities. Gluttony. Evil. Ungodliness. I’m sure these attributes alongside a multitude of others may bubble to the forefront of your mind as we speak. Are these attributes worthy of full retreat? Is this why are tone it’s so condemning when speaking about others who participate and think differently than us? So again I ask, what are we so resolute about…or worse, fearful towards that we would find it best to sever ties (for the night) with families participating in Halloween? Certainly we must realize that our retreating posture produces the opposite effect of the godly engagement our churches religiously preach about right? Is not engagement of the unbeliever our aim? Have we not matured to the point of maintaining our salt-like qualities in the midst of the world?
Now this is not to imply that there are not real spiritual points of concern to be addressed; because make no mistake, there really is and we should not be naïve to this. Some of them were just mentioned. This blog does not aim to proclaim that all things are permissible on a holiday that often leads to debauchery, sensualism, and the thrill for what is dark and demonic. Full participation on this evening is not what I’m suggesting at all. For the precise expression of how your family might better participate should be left to your discernment; counseled by the biblical narrative of how Christ lovingly engaged the world. But the laggardly, God-dishonoring method of familial disengagement from the very holiday in which our most vulnerable members (the children) of society participate in cannot be our resolution. There are better ways to approach this holiday winsomely for both our children and our neighbors sake. Redemption is plausible, and our accessibility as the people of God on Halloween is necessary for our “witness” to be both genuine and timely. And rather we realize it or not, our children’s “awe” is at stake. After all, they are looking primarily towards our example in so far as what it means to be a Christian who lovingly engages culture.

Your Children’s Awe
Imparting to your children that they should avoid any participation in Halloween because of its cult-ish origins is an archaic explanation that does little to inspire them to view their faith as enjoyable. Holding such a hopeless posture does nothing to stir up your child’s affections as they attempt to IMAGINE Jesus Christ in a hope-filled way. Instead, it further oppresses and discourages them from pursuing their Christian life with a sense of vitality and joyful expectancy. So parents stop doing this! For you are participating in the slow death of your children’s “awe” towards the incredible attractiveness of the person of Christ. (read my annotation on ‘Awe’ here to better understand what I mean)
And this slow death is happening…right now, even if you cannot yet see it. It may not show itself at 4 years old…or even at the age of 10; but all of a sudden you will be witnesses to your child’s cup of awe diminishing before your very eyes. Don’t be that parent. You see, there need not be a direct correlation between Halloween and Jesus Christ in the mind of your child. That’s not how their wiring works at that age. Children are predominantly visual learners while simultaneously being visceral feelers. This means that they experience the world through their eyes and discern what’s good, bad, pleasurable, or unpleasant by how they experience the person or event. Because we don’t live in a bubble; our children intrinsically process, or imagine, Jesus Christ in light of how we present Him within the context of the visible world that they can touch and perceive. In other words, our children are experiencing Jesus Christ by how we present Him in the experiences we provide them. Therefore, if we misapply our parental paintbrush as we color a picture of how Jesus cannot powerfully reign over every aspect of their lives (including Halloween); our children will be left with an unattractive portrait of what it means to be a child of God in 2016. This is a huge mistake. For our God is not so small that He is unable to work within this holiday.
Why is this infinitely critical? Because instead of making the Gospel attractive by teaching up the principles of how we can work with culture as agents of reconciliation; we often prostitute the wonders of God for a legalistic religion that preoccupies itself with preservation from culture as opposed to active permeation into culture with the hope of the Gospel. Can’t you see? There are an uncountable amount of subtleties that are influencing how our children imagine both Jesus and their Christian life. Rather we realize it or not; we are painting a picture of Christ to our children on a daily basis. And this portrait is either attractive or serves as a deterrent. It illustrates a life of freedom or restriction. Therefore, let us not wrongly model a separatist posture from this family orientated holiday. For Halloween may just reach a group of people we may have assumed were previously unreachable. We truly can step into this holiday with the type of freedom that does not compromise our biblical convictions nor conscience. Think deeply, for there is a way we can participate with our neighbors while still honoring God through and through.

Halloween Reaches Those Who are Far From Our Typical Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Approaches
Here’s the truth. Majority culture is terribly uncomfortable with our Easter. The family who is either uninterested or overwhelmed by the scandalous narrative concerning the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is a reality we must face. Many of our neighbors will refuse to oblige our invitation to attend Christmas services for variety of reasons. This should no longer be shocking to us. Rather it is due to the redundancy of Christmas preaching, the fear of not belonging, personal guilt, or shame connected to one’s past; many simply won’t attend these fancy Christmas services. ABC news reported that our country spent approximately $465 billion this past year over the course of four weeks of Christmas shopping. It’s no wonder why so many are too busy shopping to stop and actually think deeply about the details of their life. The level of materialistic idolatry revealed during the Christmas season correctly portrays just how far our countries affections are from that which is most important~namely Jesus Christ.
It’s much easier to purchase cheap pleasures than to deal with deep measures of one’s heart
And truth be told, our churches are just as guilty of this idolatry…it is just more dressed up. Trying to “fill the church” is always one wrong motive away from being a source of numerical idolatry. Far too often, our churches become mesmerized by attendance as opposed to the fruit of maturing disciples. Moreover, Christmas engagement still occurs on our turf within our terms. And this; in and of itself, often is enough to disengage the unbelieving onlooker. Why? Because defenses are up and the unfamiliarity of our customs and lingo is terrifying. Thanksgiving too offers its own unique set of challenges. Families across our nation spend the majority of this holiday indoors with their loved ones. Thanksgiving is typically very exclusive to the immediate (and extended) family only; making it particularly difficult to leverage this holiday with the gospel. In other words, everyone is indoors, keeping to themselves. People simply are not out and about. Therefore, access to our neighbors on Thanksgiving becomes inherently limited and our opportunities to interact with them are rare.
Now this does not mean our invitations become less important on Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas. God is still reigning over all three of these great occasions! But what it does mean is that maybe….just maybe, Halloween possesses the platform to better engage our neighbors. Consider this:
Now this does not mean our invitations become less important on Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas. God is still reigning over all three of these great occasions! But what it does mean is that maybe….just maybe, Halloween possesses the platform to better engage our neighbors. Consider this:
As we genuinely display our love through our family’s humble act of limited participation FIRST; we can then follow our loving participation with the message of hope and redemption through Christ SECOND…and in that order.
Your children will be so glad that you did. For what other holiday LITERALLY brings culture directly to your doorsteps? Just think about that! By first meeting our neighbors on their turf and on their terms for the sake of connection and community, we make great strides towards building relational equity with our neighbors in a manner where our message may actually resonate with them. Therefore; you and I, alongside our local churches, should be on the front lines of this agenda. So let us agree to put to death fear-based postures that originate from biblical ignorance. Because if you look intently upon the word of God, the message is crystal clear. Jesus was always in the trenches letting His light shine. So our efforts too should be focused on being light-bearers within the communities that God has specifically designed for us to live in. This cannot be accomplished by disengagement.
Be “Light-Bearers” of Love and Truth on a Night Where the Imagination Runs Freely
Perhaps connecting the Gospel to Halloween seems irresponsible at first glance. Maybe you struggle to catch a glimpse of the opportunity we have to connect the ‘things of God’ on a holiday that encourages seemingly encourages so many qualities that are opposite of Scripture. But let us remember our children and the imagination! Let us hold dear the real opportunity to be light-bearers to both our communities and our children. Let us so memorize that we are building our children’s imagination about what Jesus is really like. Resolve to think deeply about this holiday opportunity. It truly is possible to reform our vision to view this holiday as a worthy vehicle to deliver the love of Christ to those who need Him most. For in a country plagued by depravity and seemingly endless reports of bad news; how glorious would it be if we could offer the ultimate story filled with an endless supply of Good News instead!
O God, if we could only increase our patience. If you would be so gracious as to renew our imagination. If we could stop Ju Jitsu flipping our neighbors with the entire account of the Bible one a single night; perhaps there would be room for a genuine relationship to be fostered. For our aim is not to grapple and wrestle the narrative of Jesus into their hearts; but rather to selflessly participate in their world WITH our children as a testament to our desire to simply know them…and love them. And with this love comes opportunities to teach truth. And if we truly believe that the love and truth of God actually has the power to reconcile the lost and brokenhearted; we should be more than willing to meet our neighbors in the midst of their holiday experience. After all, it is their children who will come knocking on our doors. Instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to funnel them into our Christmas services, this holiday brings them directly to our front door!
Therefore, it is our opportunity (and I believe responsibility) to leverage our neighbors winsomely… always knowing our chief desire is to proverbially knock back on their doors of the heart. That’s why the implementation of the Christian Harvest Festival strategy is so strange. Why would we ever create events and alternatives that take us away from this engagement? Think about it this way. Christians in the hundreds of thousands leave in droves from their homes to congregate at church for their Harvest Festival all around our country. An exorbitant amount of money is spent to bring just a few unbelievers into our church doors. And at the same exact time, millions of unbelievers are knocking on our doors and no one is home…or worse have chosen to disengage by ignore their knock.
Can you really imagine any alternate universe by which Christ Jesus would squander the opportunity to engage whole families that walked through His own community…just for the sake of protecting His “personal holiness?” Do you believe He would lock Himself away in the synagogue? Would He “protect” His disciples’ purity from evil by influencing them to encamp themselves only with like-minded believers? Would He really hypothesize that the lost should find their own way to the temple to embed themselves in our Harvest Festivals? No way! Such a notion is unfathomable. Instead, I imagine our Savior joyfully answering the door with bright eyes, a wide smile, and a full heart. I imagine Him displaying that same excitement as the 150th person knocked on his door as the first. But that’s because of how I IMAGINE my Savior. Can you see?! My experiences have directly impacted my imagination to reinforce this picture of Jesus. This allows me to hope forward. I want you to as well.
So consider this; for one night…namely~ Halloween night, children across the nation use this holiday to tap into the full capacity of their unbridled imaginations. Now imagine if you agreed to do the same? What if you allowed yourself to stretch your imagination once again regarding Halloween? If we all were somehow able to puncture a hole into the vice grip of our “set ways”, perhaps the seemingly impossible would suddenly become plausible. What once looked spiritually hopeless now can look hope-filled. For we’d recognize the incredible opportunity to bear both Love and Truth towards people who may not realize that these attributes are actually deficient within them. So while the children exteriorly transform (costumes) into that which they desire most to be…we would model (not always sharing first with our words) the hope of a type of internal transformation that could forever change a person into becoming who they were actually created to be! Our joy in Christ would be our costume, and it would be ridiculously attractive! So while each child enjoyed the temporary paradise of a night filled with laughter and candy…we’d model…and later share with their parents a sweeter paradise to be had for those desiring the most exquisite treat of them all.
Can’t you see? The symbolic opportunities this holiday provides are seemingly endless when you allow your imagination to be fully at play. So allow this hope that permeates from your imagination to arise once again on Halloween. Believe again. Believe God is able to do the impossible. Hope that you are afforded the opportunity to be a participating witness to His redemptive work; remembering that hope will drive your actions. And your actions will lead to good gospel work. And as you witness the effects of these good works that come by way of loving your neighbors with love and truth, your imagination…like a child, will be stirred and renewed once again. And there’s no Bible-Believing Christian more powerful than the one who has not only child-like faith, but recaptures his child-like imagination. Praying your stirred into action. Both your children and your community will be better for it.
